Rati Thanawala is Senior Partner for the Network Strategy and Technology Evolution Practice in Bell Labs Consulting.
Prior to this role, she led Bell Labs Modeling and Advisory Services, a global organization that created sophisticated analytical models and decision support systems and applied advanced technology and network planning techniques to advise operators in the communications industry on their unique challenges with network evolution, network resilience, performance, and revenue growth. This unique modeling capability was set up by Rati in 2000 and has since grown in depth and breadth to include network and business models in all domains of ultra-broadband networking – wireless and wireline, IP routing and transport, SDN/NFV, cloud, etc. These capabilities are now incorporated into the Bell Labs Consulting Business Unit at Alcatel-Lucent.
Rati has over 30 years of experience in the introduction of new technologies into telecommunication networks, leading innovations for new products and services, and managing global organizations across a variety of R&D, systems engineering, and business management functions. Rati began her career in Bell Labs in 4ESS, leading the introduction of new services such as the AT&T 800 service, software-defined networks, and the first commercial launch of voice recognition into the AT&T network. She held positions for Business and Market Planning for 5ESS, and was the Product Manager for Intelligent Networks.
Rati holds a BS in Mathematics from Lucknow University, India, and a Masters and PhD in Computer Science from Yale University. She attended the Program for Management Development at Harvard University. Rati represents the United States on the International Scientific Committee for Networks, which supports the advancement of the network-planning discipline worldwide through contributions from research and industry organizations.
