The Gecko

Energy autonomous indoor sensing

Project overview

Gecko is our IoT module capable of sensing activities as well as the surrounding environment. We built this device with a Nordic nRF52832 MCU having 64MHz ARM® Cortex-M4F and 512KB Flash + 64KB RAM. We integrated a 6-axis Motion Sensor (Accelerometer and Gyroscope) for movements capture, as well as several other sensors, including pressure, temperature, humidity, gas quality and colour/light sensors.

In addition, our Gecko can capture sounds with an integrated microphone, and it gather light with a solar panel to extend the battery life (3.0V/30mA). In terms of connectivity, our Gecko uses a BLE Communication with gateway / smartphone and, alternatively, the collected data can be stored in an internal SD card.

We use a 500 mAh Li-Ion Battery with a battery voltage monitoring electronics. The battery can be charged via an USB (5V) port. Our Gecko is currently deployed on a variety of research studies and applications, including wearables and fixed location uses. written
