UNIX moves on

In 1991, AT&T "spun off" USL and UNIX when it sold shares to 11 other companies. The following year, the Novell Corporation signed a letter of intent to purchase USL and UNIX. The transaction was completed in 1993.

In 1995, when AT&T announced that it was planning to divest itself of many of its equipment manufacturing operations that eventually become the core of the new Lucent Technologies, it also announced that it would sell its NCR computer subsidiary and get out of the computer business.

The same year, Novell sold its entire UNIX business to the Santa Cruz Operation.

During all these changes, the Bell Labs Computing Science Research Center continued their development efforts on UNIX, eventually developing Versions 8, 9 and 10.
