Members-Only Webinar - SMARTer2020 Report:
|
Overview
In this exclusive webinar, GreenTouch Members will hear a briefing on the recently released Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) SMARTer2020 Report (download the report). The presenters will highlight the report's key findings and also discuss ways in which partner organizations such as GreenTouch can help push toward some of the report's stated goals. An interactive question-and-answer segment will follow the presentation.
About the SMARTer2020 Report
GeSI's flagship research effort, the SMARTer2020 report suggests that ICT has the potential to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 16.5%, create 29.5 million jobs and yield USD 1.9 trillion in energy and fuel savings. Per the report, while ICT's own footprint is projected to rise to 1.27 GtCO2e by 2020, its abatement potential is 7 times higher. The report also calls for concerted action by global policy makers to encourage the implementation of ICT abatement solutions, and supports those calls by including detailed national studies of the GHG abatement potential of ICT in seven countries.
Presenters
Tom Okrasinski, Senior Manager - Sustainability & Environmental Engineering, Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs
Tom Okrasinski is Senior Manager of Sustainability & Environmental Engineering at Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ.. In his twenty years at Bell Labs, he has been committed to the development of environmentally sustainable telecom products and network solutions. His innovations in these areas include eco-impact life cycle assessment tools, energy efficiency standards development, eco-beneficial materials research & advancement, and eco-sustainability metrics development.
Most recently, Tom was a major contributor to the Global e-Sustainability Initiative’s SMARTER 2020 Report, studying the greenhouse gas emissions from Information and Communications Technologies or ICT. In this landmark study, they analyzed both the eco-impact of ICT as well as ICT’s ability to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industry and society. Tom has also championed an industry-wide effort under the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative and developed a speedy eco-impact estimator that allows designers to more easily visualize ways to improve on the sustainability of an ICT product. He is also publishing guidance documents for the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Standards that will help practitioners more easily assess greenhouse gas emissions from complex ICT products, networks and applications.
Prior to Bell Labs, Tom worked for Metcalf and Eddy as an environmental engineering consultant. He also worked with Exxon Research and Engineering in their alternative fuels research such as shale oil extraction and coal liquefaction. He has a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a Master’s degree in geotechnical engineering from Drexel University and is a licensed professional engineer and planner. He resides in Clinton, New Jersey.
