Strategic Research Areas and Initial Research Portfolio
GreenTouch has publically released its first version of a Strategic Research Areas and Initial Research Portfolio document. This document includes the main strategic research directions that have been identified in order to accomplish the GreenTouch mission of improving the network energy efficiency by a factor 1000. It also highlights the major research activities and projects currently being investigated by the consortium members. In addition, the document also brings attention to promising research areas of critical need that require further in-depth investigations.
This document is critically positioned in the overall technology roadmap that GreenTouch is developing. In order to accomplish its mission of delivering by 2015 the architectures, technologies and solutions, and to demonstrate key components to increase network energy efficiency by a factor 1000 compared to 2010 levels, GreenTouch will develop a roadmap comprising of 4 essential elements:
(1) A network energy reference model and associated tools for estimating current energy trends and evaluating potential future solutions,
(2) A strategic research areas compendium that captures the major research challenges and associated energy efficiency targets,
(3) A portfolio of research projects and activities that address the strategic research areas along with an integrated and consolidated view of the overall end-to-end network architecture,
(4) A progress measurement indicator detailing how and when the research projects accomplish progress towards achieving the consortium goals.
This document addresses the second and third element of this roadmap. GreenTouch is currently actively working on the first and the fourth element of this roadmap.
